Seats from Recycled Plastic Bottles and Polyester Fabrics

Origin Lear Corporation Southfield, Michigan, United States, announced it has successfully developed a car seat called The Evolution Seat. This seat weighs 11.5 kg lighter than the unit that still uses the conventional structure without sacrificing strength and comfort.

What is more remarkable is that Lear was also able to develop new automotive fabric material called Eco Fabric Lear. This material is one hundred per cent coming from plastic bottles and recycled polyester fabric. The company plans to launch this seat in Asia next year.

In this new seat, Lear combines seven patented technologies developed by them, namely:

1. Lear Structure ECO / EVO. Mechanisms and rails together until the weight drops to 30 percent compared with conventional seats. Also reduce the use of exotic materials.

2. Dynamic Environmental Comfort System (DECS). Seat system layers (multilayer). This technology is already used on 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. This section reduces the weight of up to 50 percent. The use of organic materials is reduced to 70 percent.

3. ECO Lear Padding. Wrap the seat of polyurethane and cork is a material that can be recycled and updated. Material is a soft wood fiber, which is growing rapidly.

4. Pro Tec Plus. Active protection system can reduce the risk of hip injury to 43 percent and meet global safety regulation standards. Currently, this technology is only used in the Cadillac CTS and Honda Accord.

5. Lear EVO Mini recliner. The backrest is very light and the comparison between the strength and weight that is getting stronger. 30 percent lighter and 50 percent efficient compared to the conventional seat.

6. Soyfoam. The foam is made from soybeans, Ford has used it on the Mustang since 2008.

7. Expanded Recyclable Polypropylene (EPP). Lightweight materials are used to replace the foam from oil and 100 percent recyclable. EPP was first introduced in 2002 for the Audi A2.
