Check the seals
When it rains, it generally pours. So when buying a used car, you should always check the seals to make sure no water can get in. Spending money on a car is a big deal for anyone, and it makes sense to get the best one possible for the least money; taking the time to check a car is waterproof can save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
But how can you tell if all the seals are watertight? Well the simple answer is to take a test drive, but try to go on a day when it’s raining. You can always take a first test on a nice day, another on a miserable one. Whatever you choose to do, going out for 15 minutes or so is plenty of time to stay dry or get wet. While door seals can be pesky to fix, it’s not the end of the world if a bit of water gets through. If a torrent appears however, the door might not be aligned properly so it’s best to walk away.
You should check all doors and windows to make sure no water gets in. Looking at the dashboard can also be a good idea as some water may enter if it’s not fixed on properly. Sometimes leaves can gather on the top of the bonnet and block drainage holes, so make sure there are none. The boot should be sealed well, as should all windows. If you’re unsure, take a water pistol to test it out!
Looking online for second hand cars at places like Carsource and Teletextcars is a great idea because you can be pretty certain only high quality motors are listed. Some degree of vetting goes on to ensure only the best ones are online, and some websites even require a thorough check of all parts-including seals. If you’re not sure however, phone up and ask. It’s better to do a bit of work before hand and save yourself the time, money and effort.
Nobody wants to get wet when driving, especially on important days. When looking to buy a used motor then, it’s hugely important to make sure the car is watertight by checking all the seals. Only then can you be confident of staying high and dry!
